Dee Maxinzi is a 26-year-old Oral Hygienist, born and raised in a small township known as Mbekweni in Paarl. He received his Bachelor of Oral health (B.OH) in 2014 at the University of the Western Cape. Dee is part of the multidisciplinary team that works hand-in-hand with Dr A. Singh, from consulting patients, treatment planning, implementation of treatment plans and at the maintenance phase of the treatment.

Previously Dee worked at a general dental practice and later as Practice manager at a specialist orthodontic practice. In 2016 at the age of 23 years, he was appointed at New image orthodontics to start-up a branch in a small town known as Kokstad in KwaZulu-Natal. It was a welcomed challenge at the time to help create a practice that would ultimately become self-sustainable.

Dee is a highly skilled Oral hygienist in maintenance and providing oral health care to patients with dental implants and natural teeth. “I am privileged to be working at the upmarket Prosthodontic specialist practice, of Dr Ashen Singh the Prosthodontist”.

What is Prosthodontics: Prosthodontics is a speciality of dentistry concerned with the treatment planning, design, manufacture, and fitting of bio-compatible substitutes for missing teeth, jaws, head and neck parts.

How do you introduce yourself?

I'm Madodomzi Maxinzi, well known as Madoda but you can call me Dee.

What do you think makes you a "better man"?

I think I’m a better man because I am very polite, respectful, considerate and presentable. My field taught me to be gentle and easy on people. For example, almost every day in our office we see different kinds of people, with different backgrounds and different behaviours. Most patients present to our offices in need of some guidance with regard to oral hygiene and maintenance, it is up to us as dental professionals to uplift them and bring positivity in their lives. Good oral hygiene improves one's confidence.

I am a very honest and loyal individual; I strongly believe in integrity. I always want to do things the right way even if there is no one watching.

Why a career in dentistry?

It was very easy for me to choose a career in dentistry or I should say dentistry chose me. I remember a few years ago, my dad was involved in an accident and he lost his upper front two teeth (central incisors). I wanted to help my dad so badly by getting his teeth back in his mouth. I went to look for his teeth in the area of the accident, unfortunately, I couldn’t find them. From that day I told myself one day I’ll fix my dad and get him a new set of teeth. Here I am in 2019, I am working at the Prosthodontic practice and we specialize in replacing missing teeth. Unfortunately, my dad is no more but I am sure he is proud looking down upon his son.

The other reason is that I like to have a direct impact on someone’s life. In dentistry, we are blessed to have the opportunity to change people’s lives and restore long lost self-confidence and improve the general well-being of our patients.

What are the myths about oral care?

b) Braces are only for kids

c) White teeth are healthy teeth

d) Brushing with charcoal will make your teeth white

e) Teeth whitening damages your teeth

f) Only sugar causes tooth decay

g) Women can ignore bleeding gums during pregnancy

h) Bad breath is a sign of gum disease

i) Oral health is not linked to general health and well being

What's your winning formula?

I strongly believe in integrity, it helps me to be safe and be on the winning side all the time. Self-confidence is also key, I believe in myself so much, that makes it easier for the next person to believe in me. Punctuality is very important, I try to be on time for work, meetings, gym and to finish any task at hand before the deadline.

I believe that for me to do good; I must look good and presentable for the specific occasion. What you say or the message you convey to people can last longer than what you practically do for them.

What's next for you?

I am privileged to be working with a great Prosthodontist. The plan is to grow as an active Oral hygienist in dental implantology and oral rehabilitation. I would like to see myself as one of the National speakers in big congresses, educating oral hygienists, dentists and dental specialists about the role of Oral hygienists in dental implantology and restorative dentistry.

Long term goal: I would like to own a network of mobile dental clinics. Why mobile clinic? From my work experience through the years, I have identified a need that is faced by many South African patients. That is the need for dental hygiene services but inadequate services to many areas. Besides that, with more demanding work environments people find it hard to take time out to drive too; or search out such services. I would like to take my services to them. In this way, I also play an active role in improving the quality of life of people in all the communities where my network reaches.

What's your ultimate advice when it comes to oral care?

I always tell my patients; your teeth are just like your car. If you love your car, you keep it clean all the time, you always make sure gas is filled up before travelling, when it is due for service you take it in.

You need to apply the same mindset for your teeth and oral health in general. You must brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss once a day, rinse with mouth wash at least twice a day and last but not least you must visit your dentist or oral hygienist at least twice a year for a check-up and scale and polish (teeth cleaning)

What's your number One oral care product that is you prefer?

There are quite a few oral care products and brands that serve different purposes. It is difficult to pick one individual product as they work in conjunction with each other, eg: toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash and floss.

I personally use an oral B electric toothbrush but travel with my Colgate slimsoft manual toothbrush. I enjoy the Colgate total toothpaste. I rinse twice daily with Listerine and never miss a day of flossing with my oral B satin floss.
