Top 4 Issues Men Face Today

Let’s face it: it’s not easy for men to talk about ‘men’s issues’. Imagine a world where men would comfortably express themselves. A society that helps young men navigate the world around them. Men are not willing to openly communicate with each other. We all used to men reciting manly monologues to each other – I’m referring to the infamous ‘man talk’.

There’s hope, especially after seeing heartwarming comments from men in our recent articles: How To Be A Better Men and The Fall of Masculinity. Pity there are men who are still holding on to the damaging notions of masculinity. The so called ‘men of the house’ that prefer to be feared and justify every wrong doing by ‘I’m the man after all’. Below are some of the issues men face today:

Depression

Men are three times more likely to kill themselves than women and suicide is the leading cause of death in men aged between 15 and 44. But men are less likely to get the help they need. Asking for a professional help is perceived as being weak. To avoid being called ‘barbie dolls’ young men choose to commit suicide

Masculinity

Society is setting up young men for failure with the unreasonable pressures. It’s not easy to break our of this BOX of toxic masculinity. Young men aren’t expected to be vulnerable and expressive. The ways in which “being a man” is acceptable by our cure is narrow and limiting.

Absent Fathers

Most fathers are not in the picture. Their sons are raised by grandparents or older siblings. No wonder we have unruly young men that kill each other inside school premises. These young men learn all the negative hack of survival from their peers. Society doesn’t have much male role models that are kind, communicative and nurturing.

Violence

Men are encouraged to be aggressive all the time, repress their feelings, and to fight every time someone threatens me. We all turn a blind eye to the gangs and violence in our community. All of these act of violence are always dismissed as ‘boys being boys’ or as ‘another phase’.What are you doing as a man to improve your community?
