Bro, Do You Understand What Sexual Consent Is?

Bro, let us be serious for a minute. Does anybody actually ask for consent? In 2019, asking for consent could “kill the mood” but it shouldn’t be awkward or scary. There’s a culture out there of men “forcefully taking what’s theirs” — meaning, undermining woman’s boundaries. That’s shocking! Blaming it on alcohol is a lame excuse.

Sexual consent shouldn’t be a complex matter as it is now. Our society is making this a woman’s duty to educate the men in her life about consent. This is so unfair. Women from a young age are taught about giving their consent, but it does not place the same responsibility on teaching men how to properly ask for it.

Now is not the time for men to “mind their own business” — we have done that for too long. This is time for men to have a united voice against women abuse. #MenAreTrash includes the caring husband, the supportive brother and your smart uncle. By turning a blind eye then it means you are part of the problem.

We have seen women around the globe uniting in movements such as #MeToo, #TimesUp #AmInext. None of us seems to start these conversations amongst men. We all act surprised when one of our mates is accused of sexually assaulting a woman. He is shouting “I’m not a rapist! She only said no TWICE”.

Learning how to talk about consent in a way that feels comfortable and natural for you is key. It can be a part of having a conversation with someone about what they want to do, what you want to do, and finding where those things overlap. So, really, asking for consent doesn’t have to be this sort of awkward, separate conversation.

Let us start such chats amongst each other. Your “no” could prevent a crime and save an innocent woman.
