[Newsletter] Turn Over A New Leaf

Who hasn’t been hurt by the actions or words of another?

Perhaps a friend or family member said something mean growing up, maybe your partner maybe had an affair, or maybe you had a traumatic experience such as being physically or emotionally abused.

These scenarios can all cause wounds that can leave painful lasting feelings of anger and bitterness.

When someone hurts you, it’s natural for someone to hold on to anger, resentment, and thoughts of revenge. It’s also normal for someone to turn over a new leaf by embracing forgiveness and moving forward.

As much as this sounds wild, if you don’t practice forgiveness, you might be the one who suffers the most. Embracing forgiveness enables you to also embrace peace, hope, and joy in your life.

So what is ‘forgiveness’?

Forgiveness can be interpreted differently by different people but the main thing about is that it involves a decision to let go of resentment or any thoughts of revenge. And NO, forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting or excusing the harm done to you. It just simply means that you are freeing yourself from the control of the person who harmed you. Forgiveness provides you with a kind of peace that helps you go on with your life.

What are the benefits of forgiving someone?

  • Healthier relationships
  • Improved mental health
  • Less anxiety, stress, and hostility
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Fewer symptoms of depression

What are the effects of holding a grudge?

If you are unforgiving:

  • You may bring that anger and bitterness into your relationships.
  • The anger may consume your mind so much that you can’t enjoy being present.
  • You may become depressed or anxious.
  • You may feel that your life lacks meaning or purpose.
  • You may lose valuable and enriching connectedness with others.

How do I reach a state of forgiveness?

Forgiveness is a commitment to a personalized process of change. To move from suffering to forgiveness, you might:

  • Realise the power of forgiveness and how it can improve your life.
  • Need to consider joining a support group to help you get through it.
  • Need to see a therapist so that you can talk through your it.
  • Acknowledge your pain and hurt and how it affects your behaviour and figure out a way to release the pain.
  • Identify what needs healing and who needs to be forgiven.
  • Move away from your role as a victim but rather release the power and control the person who hurt you has over you.
  • Choose to forgive the person.

This is so good. Positivity all the way. It is true that sometimes holding grudges can lead to a more resentful and bitter life. One thing I’ve learnt is that “Forgive to become BETTER not BITTER”

As the old saying goes, what is messed up by the tongue can only be fixed by a mature conversation between both parties. Forgiveness is the key to moving on and finding inner peace. Leaving the past behind will bear fruitful clear minds.
