Perhaps this article shouldn’t be brought up during women’s month. However, this is an equally important issue. We’re mostly bombarded with “men privileges” that [sometimes] dismiss an important debate around men issues.
Below are the four common issues men face. Bro, let’s take a look at ourselves.
Maternity Leave
Men are conditioned to be breadwinners, and a man’s sense of duty is often fear-based. Our culture makes it difficult for men to be nurturers. For example, it’s even difficult for many men to agree to paid paternity leave.
Regardless of the new laws in place to offer men “paid paternity leave” yet there’s a long way o go. In most African cultures as long dads can provide — being present for your kids it’s “women’s duty”.
Depression
It’s quite crazy but not come as a surprise that the majority of men suffer from depression. The sad part is, fewer men get it treated. Our society doesn’t have time nor space for “weak’ men. Real issues such as depression are quickly dismissed as attention-seeking tactics or petty issues for failures.
Men, when are we addressing this issue?
Trust Issues
It took me forty-five minutes to get the above image. It is too good to be true. I had to zoom in as it is a rare sight — men don’t need each other this way. If you see [us] men laughing and chatting, we only talking about the typical stuff nothing personal. This is how men do personal: “I’m getting new wheels, I’m doing great in my new job.” or any similar chat that makes them sound and look more powerful.
Men don’t do vulnerability — who is surprised by the suicide rate amongst men?
Lack of communication
Men, instead of asking for help or expressing their feelings they choose to shut down. That’s just the first grade [shutting down] the list is endless. Men would prefer to communicate by abusing alcohol, numbing with drugs or inflicting pain on others.
Do we blame society or do we look deeper into ourselves? These are the everyday struggles of most men around the globe.
