Why Do We Care What Others Think?

To an extent, we all care what other people think of us. In fact, it permeates every facet of our being, and we typically (in most cases) are not even aware of it.

If not, why the constant need to see who viewed your WhatsApp status or liked your pictures on Instagram? Approval from others gives us higher sense of self-esteem. We measure our value by the number of followers and subscribers we have on our online platforms.

And we all do it proudly for the “culture”.

How do we stop being bothered by what others think of us?

The need for acceptance remains as a powerful influence on our thoughts and feelings. And the fear that we won’t be accepted robs us the opportunity to make deep connections with others. Just think of the number of ideas you’ve buried in your head due to the fear of what-if-no- one-digs-it.

Caring too much of what others think has made most of us to suffer from “people-pleasing” syndrome. We go to places, wear clothes and listen to music based on what strangers certify as cool. Might as well call ourselves the “slaves” of the cool culture. We’re convinced that others recognition matters to our self-worth and how deeply we value ourselves.

Perhaps we care so much about others because our happiness depends on the quality of our relationships. So, there’s a good reason we worry about what others think of us. We want to be in their good books so that we can develop and nurture our relationships with them. That’s a good enough reason – as long we’re not chasing strangers to approve.

Caring for something or someone simply means that you’re invested. So, it’s bad investment to care about opinions of people that don’t matter. Self-approval comes out of self-acceptance, which rises out of the recognition that we are, in fact enough, just as we are.

Bro, free yourself from the outside validation and be kind to yourself.

Who cares what others think especially if they aren’t paying the bills. I always say the day you contribute to my success is the day that your opinion about me and my life will matter however for now just enjoy the ride. We are all just out here trying to make our mark in life. Don’t Hate Rather Congratulate

Self Confidence is what we all inspire to possess. For others it comes easier and for some it’s a work in progress such as myself. I also do think our financial situation plays a huge role in how we see ourselves. Money makes it easier but not impossible as nothing is impossible it just takes hard work and determination and those qualities we all have within ourselves.

“The need for acceptance remains as a powerful influence on our thoughts and feelings.” This statement speaks volumes because it really is true. And the need for acceptance might not necessarily emanate from the place of “People Pleasing”, but sometimes we try hard to reach out to others, either family, friends or colleagues, that we eventually lose touch of what makes us unique to what is seemingly more acceptable to these parties.

Any one can fall trap to this but it’s important to be reminded that you need to care about how you feel about yourself before you care about what other people think about you

Well my parents taught me not to do things that will embarrass them in the community. I guess that is were all this syndrome came from. After tertiary I realised that I don’t really need to care what people say cause there will always nay sayers whether I do wrong or not.

Those are the kinds of words i was telling myself last week . I spent a lot of time caring for other people and i negleted myself in the process , I kind forgot about things that make me happy and make me look foward in life.. I got to a point where I said ” f**k anyone else and make more time for myself ” .

There’s a quote I read that really does speak to being less stressed about what people think without being completely ignorant. You have control of what is important to you.

I believe it’s human nature to always (if not to an extent) care about what others think. We do this for some sort of acceptance, to fill a certain void and/or hide deeper scars from society…

We need to learn to emancipate from such feelings and live our lives the best way we know how 😎❤️
