How To Handle Being Ghosted By Recruiters

Candidates on the job hunt are at risk of being ghosted by recruiters than before.

So, instead of hiring , a lot of companies have gone into a hiring freeze due to uncertain future. Many have been forced to fire their employees due to Covid-19. There have been mass layoffs and a significant reduction in working hours across industries, especially in industries like hospitality and entertainment.

Most of us can handle an automated email rejection.

Nothing is more hurtful than “ghosting”. For those who are fortunate to no have been ghosted before, it simply means that someone has stopped responding to all communication. It’s what the cool kids call being “mized” or “blue-ticked”. Being ghosted affects your sleeping routine, ruin your appetite and literally mess with your vibe. Whether it’s done by your bae or recruiter – the pain is just the same.

It doesn’t mean applying for a job and never hearing back—that happens to everyone. It means you applied, assumed the interview went well, and expected to hear good news soon. And it’s been more than three weeks you haven’t received an email from a recruiter.

Before you allow your mind to cook all the negative narratives such as “I’m not good enough”, “I have bad luck” or “my qualification is useless”.

Take a deep breath and see if you’ve done any of the steps below after the interview:

  • Gratitude email:  After an interview you have at least a day (not after a week) to send an email to the recruiter to express your gratitude for the interview and specify what interests you to the role or the company.
  • Follow-up email: if you have done the first step and two weeks have passed with no feedback, then you can politely follow up to the recruiter. Bro, you won’t lose your street cred for sending that email.

I know some recruiters can be intimidating but you have a right to ask (especially when the interview is going well) about the recruitment process and when it will be finalised. As guys we avoid anything that will make us come across as desperate or weak, but nothing is worse than unemployment.

Eish there’s nothing so painful as being ghosted, this happened to me last year 2020 January, I was called by one of the big companies here in Johannesburg, for an interview as a small business owner, I went there and I was meeting as the requirements, they give me a document that I must sign but they told me I must bring it back signed after two days. I took the documents with me at home brought it back after two days as they told me , when I got there I handed it to the recruiter , they even told me that now that I have signed those documents it means I am officially in, so they said they will call me or send me an email just to let me know when I will start, even today I am still waiting. I really don’t know what happened
