What’s Your Heritage?

What’s your heritage? This is one of the complex questions in 2019. The culture is constantly evolving and encourages individuality before everything else. Perhaps this shouldn’t be a complicated matter ― there’s beauty in celebrating our differences. Slaughtering a goat to express gratitude to the ancestors could be an unnecessary practice for a modern Xhosa man. Or going to the initiation school could be irrelevant for a Sotho boy growing up in the suburbs.

Maybe a “potjiekos” isn’t your favorite meal anymore, even though it was part of your childhood. It’s important to know where you come from BUT it’s wise to define the world in your own terms.

 Tradition is part of who we are. It’s what brought us here. Can we follow it without taking care of ourselves? The answer is no! Sjava, is a modern Zulu man that invests in his image without dumping his roots.
