How Boys Are Raised

Raising a boy child has never been so important as it is today. It doesn’t have to be your biological son, it could be your nephew. The days of dismissing things like “boys are just being boys” are long gone. Our society is full of aggressive, abusive and suicidal young men. MEN, this is our responsibility to pay a close eye on the use of language and be role models. Young girls can’t always be told to be cautious and wear long skirts without DEALING with boys first.

We selected a few of the negative language we use to “raise” boys that some of us perceive as motivation.

It’s OK to cry

Society doesn’t permit men to be vulnerable. It all starts at home with negative utterances such as “boys don’t cry” or “man up and fight for yourself”. These encouraging toxic words cripple boys and make them entitled zombies. Imagine a society that creates a vulnerable space for young men. There’s a freedom that comes with crying and communicating one’s emotions.

Fight back 

“Son, if you want those bullies to stop you need to fight back.” Most parents have turned their innocent sons into bullies. Fighting back means to be always prepared to start a fight or keep on reminding everyone of your strength. The real strength comes from within and the good news is, it won’t harm anyone.

Don’t be too nice 

There’s nothing wrong in being the little dude and running around to help others. It’s not a big deal to walk away from a fight or ignore an insult. Nothing to be ashamed of if your son prefers feminine colours and chooses ballet over a soccer team.

Trust no one 

“Trust no one” is one of the laziest advice on planet earth. The number of young men committing suicide and abusing drugs is scary — advising a boy to quit on people he’ll look for validation somewhere else. Teaching a boy to trust people will open him up to sincere relationships. If he can’t talk to you at least he’ll confide to his teacher, friend or brother.
