How to fix a patchy beard

Listen we aren’t throwing shade on beards as all beards are perfect and not everyone has a patchy beard but we understand that some facial hair might not be as thick as you’d like.

The population of men with beards has increased dramatically over the last five years but we’ve also noticed how many men have mentioned they aren’t quite content with their manes, with sparse growth being the biggest issue.

Luckily, we’ve got some knowledge on what to do and what not to do to fix that patchy beard, once and for all:

  1. Let’s get even

This is all dependant on the beard style as some have a significant change in length from short too long. Faded beards can make for an impressive look but if you are prone to patchiness you might want to give this one a skip. Moral of the story is to keep everything an even and uniform length, so it’s not as noticeable.

  1. It’s time to grow up

If you only struggle with one or two patchy areas, these can often be masked with a longer beard. Think of it as a little comb over for the face, rather than your head. The longer hair can be used to cover the areas where hair doesn’t grow through. Your best friend a beard brush or comb but take note that it tends to work better where patches are small.

  1. Healthy you, healthy beard

Your hair is composed almost entirely of protein so your diet is critical for the production of normal healthy hair. In other words, the better you eat, the better your beard. Make sure to drink lots and lots of water and hit the gym because your beard is a temple and all that.

  1. Balm is your bestie

Lots of men’s beards tend to become drier and more brittle than the stuff that grows on their head. This just means there is a higher chance of breakage and weak strands. Cue balms or oils. These are great as a moisturiser and conditioner, forming a protective barrier and strengthening your whiskers making them more robust. This is also great for your skin and will leave you looking fresher than ever.

  1. Live and let dye

This isn’t for everyone but if your patchiness is less baldness and more a blonde-ness or grey-ness, then you should seriously consider dyeing your facial hair. Tip: try keep it as au natural as possible. Pick something that matches the rest of your whiskers, or at least the hair on your head.

  1. Consult the pros

And if all else fails there’s hair transplants or beard transplants – yes, it’s a thing. The principle is basically the same. The hair follicles are extracted from the back of the head and implanted in the beard, therefore solving your patchiness issues permanently. But hold your horse because it often takes six months to a year for the new hair to full bed in and look like an actual beard. It also doesn’t come cheap but it’s worth a shot.

The tips provided, such as keeping an even length, using balms and oils, and considering a transplant, show that there are many ways to address this common issue. And let’s not forget the importance of a healthy diet and exercise for overall hair health. Welldone to the author for shedding light on a topic that many men struggle with, but few openly discuss.

I have a patchy beard, but it is steadily forming so nicely ‘cause of constant combing & “Let live & let dye” approach by keeping it natural. Love the results and I’ll keep combing, trimming & not applying anything but balm..

The pros always give advice that worked FOR THEM. But the only way I and others can learn on how and what our beard responds to is by trying out one solid thing for a few months and see results.
