It’s Never Late To Learn New Things

Happy New Months gents!

With less than 2 months left of the year, there is still so much time to learn something new or gain new skills.

This month we want to focus on those little things that people expect us guys to know, but we sometimes actually have no clue about!

Here are 2 random life skills that you can learn:

HOW TO CHANGE A CAR TYRE

First, you need to make sure that you have the right tools and that you’re in a safe enough space to change your tyre. It’s better to drive further and risk damaging the wheel rim than stop somewhere dangerous. Remember to always leave your hazard lights on when you park and put a reflective jacket on if you have one.

What equipment is needed to change a car tyre? Apart from the spare wheel, you will need the following:

  • Wrench – for removing the wheel nuts
  • Jack – for lifting the car off the ground
  • Wheel chock – to stop the car from rolling when jacked up (bricks can be used instead)
  • Wheel nut key – if locking nuts are fitted
  • Car handbook – for reference (e.g. on jacking points)

The simple 10 steps:

  1. Prepare the car

Apply the handbrake and make sure that all passengers are out of the car.

  1. Position the wheel chocks

Wheel chocks prevent the car from rolling while jacked up. You need to position a chock on the opposite wheel to the one with a puncture. So if your right front tyre has a puncture, put a chock behind the left rear tyre. Bricks or large rocks can do the same job if you don’t have a dedicated chock.

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts

You can do this while the car is still on the ground. Turn the wheel wrench anti-clockwise and loosen the nuts to the point where they can be turned by hand (be warned – they may be tough to loosen).

  1. Jack the car up

Consult your handbook to see where the jacking points are. Aim to position the jack at the side of the car, close to the punctured wheel. Raise the car slowly until the flat tyre is 10-15cm off the ground.

  1. Remove the flat tyre

Loosen and remove the wheel nuts from the tyre and gently pull the tyre towards you until it comes free.

  1. Mount the spare wheel

Slide the spare wheel in line with the wheel nut slots. Replace the wheel nuts and tighten them by hand.

  1. Lower the car and tighten the bolts

Use the jack to drop the car down slightly, so that the spare tyre is in contact with the ground. Tighten the wheel nuts.

  1. Fully lower the car

Bring the car fully down to earth and remove the jack.

  1. Check the spare tyre pressure

If you have one, use a tyre pressure gauge to check the spare wheel is fully inflated. If you don’t have one, you can drive slowly to the nearest petrol station and use the gauge there.

  1. Take your punctured tyre for repairs

Very IMPORTANT! Don’t drive with a spare tyre for too long. Get your tyre fixed or replace so that you can have your spare in good condition for another emergency.

    Its NEVER too late to learn new things. Fundamentally I think everyone should know or learn how to change a tyre, because that will most definitely come in handy at some time in your life. you should always stive to learn something new each and every day.
