To love and to be loved is a two-way transaction in any relationship whether it is a relationship with family, friends or a romantic relationship.
When we take a look at relationships between women and men and bring out the topic of LOVE, and something that is also loved; MONEY, what thoughts come to mind? Is love with money something that is shown equally in a relationship?
Some may yes, and some may say no, some may have other opinions about this topic, but let’s unpack it from an angle where love between males and females is seen as NOT being equal. We will also explore some advice that you can take to manage this in your relationships.
Valentines day, for example; a day of love celebrated internationally, we always witness women being shown love by the men in their lives by being showered with gifts, flowers and all kinds of romantic gestures. Rarely do we see the same from women, and some men feel pressured by this ‘societal norm’.
Very often men express that women expect men to meet their financial demands, give them gifts, take them on vacations, while also meeting their emotional and physical needs. Most of these require MONEY which is why men often wonder if there is really a survival of the fittest battle between love and money.
Before we continue, let’s take a step back…the culture of love and money between male and females stems from the gender roles that were put into place many years ago where the women were expected to perform household duties while waiting for the men to come back home with an income to take care of the family.
The world has; however, evolved over the years and this culture has been taken into an extreme in some cases. With all the pressure of trying to be the perfect ‘man’, some men do experience the battle on love and money. Here are a few ways you can handle the war between love and money with your loved one:
- BE TRANSPARENT
Be honest and open with your loved one about your financial capabilities so that they can be aware and have realistic expectations.
- DISCUSS LIFESTYLE CHOICES TOGETHER
Have conversations about the type of life you both want to live so that there can be compromise in the relationship. Make sure you are clear on what you both want in life so that you are on the same page.
- SET EXPECTATIONS TOGETHER
Having unrealistic expectations will lead to disappointment from both parties. It is important that you set expectations so that you can avoid money and relationship problems.
- STILL SPOIL YOUR LOVED ONE
We are not saying you must not spoil your loved one, we just encourage you do it in a mindful way that will not cause a war between love and money in your life. We want you to love fully, boldly, and whole heartedly, but with no pressure from the war between love and money.
Best wishes,

Unfortunately us Men have pride, when our financial situation change we put ourselves under so much pressure and stress that we forget to make our partners understand that live has changed, we carry the burden alone which ultimately put a strain on our relationship and love. Love is amazing especially with someone who loves you as you are and accept your short comings.
As a gent that has been in failed relationships before and currently in a serious relationship, I can speak about transparency which plays a huge role in a relationship. This article explains a whole lots of factors that we tend to turn a blind eye on. Somehow we all have been broken before and that how we learn about life.
Thank you Manbox for this read!
True love is hard to find and when you think you found it, the illusion is in your eyes – love it blinds us all.
Living hand to mouth every month , money is evil , yet we need it to live and get basic needs . It takes a strain on a relationship, you are so caught up taking to make ends meet that you forget about your relationship and its hard , I’ve been having it hard the pass few months but i thank God we are surviving so far.
People nowadays in relationships they act like as if they love but knowing very well tht there are just there for the money. Love is a beautiful thing and we must learn to love and we start by just loving ourselves
I was retrenched last year so i am doing my own handyman business and its very stressfull i dont know if i will have money every month. So it take strain on my marraige.
Love is a beautiful feeling, love gives you confidence to be you. It enables one to be a better person. It gives you the courage to trust. But nowadays, it’s all about what do you have. It no longer about love, today’s love has conditions.
Transparency in a every relationship is 👌, and I always say leave a room for disappointments, were not perfect and will never be,just be you,and love yourself first.,
Love is an amazing and beautiful feeling, everyone can attest to that. But then love becomes a burden if expectations destroy that love due to a person seeking financial security and etc. Whether we like it or not, everything that needs nurturing has to involve money. But it’s how we go about it that matters.
Some people get into new relationships with the intentions of financial support. You’ll be paying and spoiling your partner but you don’t realize that it is not reciprocated because you’re in love and you’re a man right? a man should take care of his partner financially, emotionally and any other ‘lly’ you could think of. But who takes care of the man? Love should not come as a one way thing, it should be a two way thing, I’m not dating alone here, men deserve to be spoiled too.
Unless you and your partner both set the record straight of what should happen in your relationship and what is expected from each other.
