Did #MrSouthAfrica2019 Make Us “Redefine” beauty?

The Mr South Africa pageant last month made headlines after the list of its finalists sparked conversation on social media, with many criticising the contestants for their looks. Mr South Africa’s CEO JP Robberts says the competition is to ‘discover a man in South Africa who exhibits certain virtues and principles such as compassion and and integrity”.

Perhaps we all mistaken Mr South Africa to being a beauty pageant. The platform is for men to better themselves, and gain public support in driving awareness for various charitable causes or initiatives. It’s not about LOOKS but INTEGRITY! This is a perfect platform to help young men to redefine what it means to be a ‘man’ for themselves.

Twitter was quick to criticise the finalists based on their looks:

These candidates exhibit certain virtues and are each playing a part in their communities. Nowadays, most young men need positive role models to guide them. These men represent a better world, where issues such depression and anxiety are treated as mental health issues instead of being labelled as issues for the ‘weaklings’.

What positive role are you playing in your community to motivate or help others?
