Is Your Smartphone Affecting Your Relationship

Is your smartphone improving the quality of your relationships? Uhm, we all know it’s doing the opposite. The reason we’re on social media isn’t just to ‘connect’ with old friends and stay in touch with the current ones — we borrowed that line from Mark Zuckerberg’s first pitch. There’s nothing wrong in keeping up with current affairs and sharing your experiences online. The real issue begins when you can’t have a conversation without checking your phone. Dude, you’re not really missing out on anything!

What’s a big deal? The term for it is “phubbing” — it’s the practice of snubbing other in favour your mobile phones. Most of us are so accustomed to this behaviour we have accepted it as a norm. Nothing is more irritating than trying to engage with someone who seems to have something more important going on in their phones. Recent studies are revealing the profound impact phubbing can have on our relationships and well-being.

It’s doesn’t just affect your relationship with your mates, neighbours or colleagues  — it also affects the relationship with yourself! When last did you disconnect from WiFi and reflect on your life? The human relationships are based on authentic connections — everyone wants to be ‘seen’ or ‘head’. The healthier relationships are the ones nurtured offline. Bro, give yourself a break from your smartphone, pay attention in your surrounding and connect with people around me.

Are you a victim or perpetrator of phubbing?
