#MandelaDay: Movies About Nelson Mandela’s Legacy

Every year on July 18, Mzansi and the world gather to celebrate Mandela Day. In the spirit of ‘ubuntu’ we trek to the nearest school to paint a wall or hand over food parcels to the homeless. Why 67 minutes? Well, because that’s what the entire campaign is based on. Nelson Mandela fought for social justice for 67 years— we are encouraged to start with 67 minutes.

If you have done a good deed and looking for other ways to cultivate the spirit of Madiba – there are a plethora of movies celebrating his life. We only selected the top 4 movies— I’m certain the other more documentaries and movies out there.

Mandela’s Gun: 

The film Mandela’s Gun tells the story of a young Nelson Mandela and the symbolism of his side-arm weapon—starring Tumisho Masha as Madiba. A semiautomatic Makarov pistol given to him by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, the gun came to represent his revolutionary awakening and the start of the armed struggle against apartheid.

Invictus 

Invictus is a biographical sports drama film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. The story is based on the John Carlin book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation about the events in South Africa before and during the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom 

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is a 2013 British-South African biographical film directed by Justin Chadwick from a script written by William Nicholson and starring Idris Elba and Naomie Harris. The film is based on the 1995 autobiographical book Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela.

Mandela and de Klerk 

Mandela and de Klerk is a 1997 made-for-television drama film written by Richard Wesley and directed by Joseph Sargent. The film stars Sidney Poitier and Michael Caine. The film documents the negotiations between F.W. de Klerk and Nelson Mandela to end South African apartheid, and was nominated for numerous awards in 1997 and 1998.

Winnie Mandela 

Jennifer Hudson stars as activist, and Nelson Mandela’s wife, Winnie Madikizela, in this historical drama. Mandela is played by Terrence Howard. The film was adapted from Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob 2003 biography, Winnie Mandela: A Life.
