To love and to be loved is a two-way transaction in any relationship whether it is a relationship with family, friends or a romantic relationship.
When we take a look at relationships between women and men and bring out the topic of LOVE, and something that is also loved; MONEY, what thoughts come to mind? Is love with money something that is shown equally in a relationship?
Some may yes, and some may say no, some may have other opinions about this topic, but let’s unpack it from an angle where love between males and females is seen as NOT being equal. We will also explore some advice that you can take to manage this in your relationships.
Valentines day, for example; a day of love celebrated internationally, we always witness women being shown love by the men in their lives by being showered with gifts, flowers and all kinds of romantic gestures. Rarely do we see the same from women, and some men feel pressured by this ‘societal norm’.
Very often men express that women expect men to meet their financial demands, give them gifts, take them on vacations, while also meeting their emotional and physical needs. Most of these require MONEY which is why men often wonder if there is really a survival of the fittest battle between love and money.
Before we continue, let’s take a step back…the culture of love and money between male and females stems from the gender roles that were put into place many years ago where the women were expected to perform household duties while waiting for the men to come back home with an income to take care of the family.
The world has; however, evolved over the years and this culture has been taken into an extreme in some cases. With all the pressure of trying to be the perfect ‘man’, some men do experience the battle on love and money. Here are a few ways you can handle the war between love and money with your loved one:
- BE TRANSPARENT
Be honest and open with your loved one about your financial capabilities so that they can be aware and have realistic expectations.
- DISCUSS LIFESTYLE CHOICES TOGETHER
Have conversations about the type of life you both want to live so that there can be compromise in the relationship. Make sure you are clear on what you both want in life so that you are on the same page.
- SET EXPECTATIONS TOGETHER
Having unrealistic expectations will lead to disappointment from both parties. It is important that you set expectations so that you can avoid money and relationship problems.
- STILL SPOIL YOUR LOVED ONE
We are not saying you must not spoil your loved one, we just encourage you do it in a mindful way that will not cause a war between love and money in your life. We want you to love fully, boldly, and whole heartedly, but with no pressure from the war between love and money.
Best wishes,

Thank you so much for this article MANBOX! It speaks to the most of us. Well with me, my peace of mind comes first more than anything. I enjoy spoiling my lady, but I will never entertain the pressure of spending money on her if I can not afford to.
This days it’s hard to find someone who really love you for who you are and not what you can offer them
We put too much pressure on ourselves even when we know we can’t afford certain things.great article

I Love the sentence “We want you to love fully, boldly, and whole heartedly, but with no pressure from the war between love and money.” Thankfully my wife and I speak openly about these things and she does not expect me to only spoil so she spoils me regularly too.

Society has normalized money as a form of prerequisite to enter into a relationship, that and many other material things. Social media has made it such a norm for “couple goals” to show a healthy and sustainable relationship when it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Relationships have lost their value in terms of what a relationship actually means. 80% of women would break up with their partners simply because there’s no income coming in
