While multitasking may feel good, it can be the enemy of efficiency. Just because you’re sweating it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ‘winning’. In our fast-paced modern world, the ability to multitask seems like an essential skill if you want to survive and thrive. Juggling multiple ideas, tasks, conversations and streams of attention has been considered an invaluable skill for professionals for many years, but has it all been a hoax?
Planning
There’s nothing more important than your peace of mind. So, if you keep on saying YES to every task and making promises – soon you’ll be labelled as ‘unreliable’. It might sound cool that you opened the door with your elbow while pushing a trolly and taking notes simultaneously. Is it really possible to divide your attention and take care of multiple things at once? No, and if it seems like you can, that’s just your brain working quickly… but not working on two things at the same time.
Realistic Goals
At 7:00am it might seem like all is possible BUT the time isn’t really your mate. Therefore it is extremely important to set realistic goals. Perhaps adopt Tim Ferriss’s philosophy “show up, do your best and go home”. That’s your working life circle.
Delegate
This could be your dream job and you enjoy it more than anything. But if you lack the skill to delegate work you might burn out. Don’t burst a muscle just because you want to prove a point. There’s a great pleasure in achieving something as team. We compromise, listen to each other and disagree to produce great results – that’s team work.
Can you do two things at once? Um, yes you can buy 2 Your Hawkins & Brimble Manbox for yourself and your dad for the Fathers Day. Great idea, right?
