“Boys Will Be Boys” Is An Expired Excuse

We all have heard it “boys will be boys” and decide to look the other way. What else can you say after that phrase? Nothing. The debate ends right there with the victim expected to lick the wounds and move on. That’s how things are. The boy walks free with zero punishment and the victim(s) get’s a lesson on how to be more tolerant. Boys can be destructive and aggressive — that’s what society expects anyway. Young girls are silenced and constantly reminded to know “their place”.

That’s one of the privileges of being a male. The phrase implies that boys are biologically wired to be violent and rough and tumble—and that they should be excused from any consequences for that behaviour. On the other hand, this discourages boys from being weak expressing their emotions. Aren’t we creating monsters that grow up thinking it’s OK to abuse women?

In a time when our country is coming to terms with the pervasiveness of sexual assault and sexual harassment, parents and educators must think carefully about what we tell our children. Building better men is about making “boys” accountable for their actions.
